Helen raises £2,000 by having her head shaved

It is just one month before the inspirational community event, Relay For Life Luton, descends on Stockwood Park, for one day and one night never to be forgotten.

And organisers are thrilled to have already raised more than £36,000 for Cancer Research UK before the 24-hour fundraiser even kicks off.

Relay For Life Luton, which takes place on September 20 and 21, is the venture of Judith and Tony Jerodiaconou, who lost their 11-year-old daughter, Charlotte, to cancer in May last year.

Along with their friend, Rachel, the Jerodiaconous, of Old Bedford Road, are organising the mammoth fundraiser in memory of their little fighter, who battled against the disease for four years.

And the family are amazed at how well preparations are going for the Relay.

Tony said: "We've all done very very well. It's getting very close now but I think we are in very good shape. Everything is pretty much sorted."

Last month, a friend of the family, Helen Smith, raised a stash of cash when she shaved her head for the cause at a barn dance.

"Helen and her partner organised the barn dance as a way of raising money," said Tony. "She had really long blonde hair. I was there with the clippers. They raised more than £2,000."

Today's Vote

Should worldwide tours of the Olympic flame be abandoned to stop giving protestors an easy target
Yes, it's a pointless stunt anyway and would not be missed
No, you can't give in to bully tactics from any quarter
Bring on more protests, they are more entertaining than the sport
