Unemployment rose in South Bedfordshire but fell in Luton as the credit crunch started to feed through into people claiming benefits.
The number of people unemployed and claiming benefits in the patch which includes Dunstable and Houghton Regis increased by 40 people, according to figures released by the government on August 13.
There were 1,085 people claiming unemployment benefits in the district, made up of 756 men and 329 women, or 1.5 per cent of the population of working age.
In Luton, the number of jobless benefit claimants, which was measured on July 10, was down by 249 people to a new total of 3,406 people, or 2.9 per cent of the working age population.
The reduction in the number of claimants was made up by 178 men and 71 women.
