Dunstable pair receive Great Britain call-ups

A dynamic duo from Dunstable Leisure Centre have both been selected to represent Great Britain in their respective sports.

Club member Ryan Freckleton has been busy in his bobsleigh, while Charlotte Cooke has excelled in rowing.

Freckleton has just returned to training following an ankle injury that kept him on crutches for two months. He returned to action in Konigsee, Germany, where his crew finished 26th, before also placing 14th in Cesana, Italy.

He was ranked seventh in the crew selection and fourth in driver selection for the 2008-09 season, with rankings based on an athletes' pushing ability. He has also been included on the development driving program, which will see him compete on the European Cup circuit, as well as crewing as a brakeman in the four-man event.

Meanwhile, Cooke, 15, has earned recognition for her extraordinary talent and has been selected to row for Great Britain.

Debbie Taylor, Business manager at Leisure Connection says that Cooke's achievements are also full testament to the instructors at Dunstable Leisure Centre, who go the extra mile to identify real sporting talent.

She said: "Charlotte was at our swim club and needed training for strength. Our fitness instructor noticed that she was very strong and thought she had potential for rowing.

"She started training and went from there. Our fitness instructors are always interested in our gym members and are always interested in their goals. This is what makes our gym slightly different."

Today's Vote

Should worldwide tours of the Olympic flame be abandoned to stop giving protestors an easy target
Yes, it's a pointless stunt anyway and would not be missed
No, you can't give in to bully tactics from any quarter
Bring on more protests, they are more entertaining than the sport
