Proud former service men and women turn out for event

Proud former servicemen were on parade in Luton town centre on Saturday for the town's second Veteran's Day.

More than 5,000 people gathered in St George's Square for the event, which ran all afternoon and included displays from Luton Sea Cadets and Dunstable Air Training Corps.

Luton And District Combined Ex-Services Association was behind the event, and organiser John Bavister said: 'It was absolutely fantastic.'

Dunstable Town Band, Harpenden Pipe Band and Vauxhall Male Voice Choir entertained the crowds with their music, and trumpeter John Ravenor impressed those who heard him play.

Mayor of Luton Councillor Lakhbir Singh opened the festivities and Luton North MP Kelvin Hopkins was also seen milling among the stands and continuous displays.

Static displays were also on show from Army Cadet Force, Royal Anglian Regiment Association, Territorial Army, The Royal British Legion and St John Ambulance, to name a few.

All donations on the day went to Help For Heroes, a new organisation formed to help those who have been wounded in Britain's current conflicts.

Today's Vote

Should worldwide tours of the Olympic flame be abandoned to stop giving protestors an easy target
Yes, it's a pointless stunt anyway and would not be missed
No, you can't give in to bully tactics from any quarter
Bring on more protests, they are more entertaining than the sport
